About Tanzania

The highest point in Africa

Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and includes the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia. About twice the size of California, this African country is bordered by the Indian Ocean and eight countries: Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique.

It is one of the unique destinations on the African continent that has yet to be discovered by many. It is a land of many wonders harboring an un-paralleled diversity of fauna and flora. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa and is bordered by three of the largest lakes on the continent: Lake Victoria (the world’s second-largest freshwater lake) in the north, Lake Tanganyika in the west, and Lake Nyasa in the southwest.

It is an East African country known for its vast wilderness areas. They include the plains of Serengeti National Park, a safari mecca populated by the “big five” game (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino), and Kilimanjaro National Park, home to Africa’s highest Mountain. Offshore lay the tropical islands of Zanzibar, with Arabic influences, and Mafia, with a marine park home to whale sharks and coral reefs.

The Tanzania people are well known for their bravery, loyalty, peace keeping and well disciplined etiquette and nature. Tanzania now has a population of about 56 million people and 120 ethnic groups. Although these ethnic groups each speak their own language, they are united by their knowledge of Swahili. Swahili is used as the language of communication in the lower courts, primary schools and during parliamentary debates. English is mainly used for diplomacy, foreign trade, higher courts and in secondary/ higher institutions of learning.  The capital is Dodoma but Dar es Salaam is by far the largest city. It is the country’s commercial and cultural hub with most of the government offices.
